Older Drivers Assessment

When you reach 85 years of age, in addition to the annual medical examination, you are required to pass a practical driving assessment every second year (age 85, 87, 89 etc) to retain your unrestricted driver licence. If you no longer require an unrestricted driver licence you can opt for a modified licence without the need for a practical driving assessment. If you need to have a practical assessment you can choose whether you do a test with the Service NSW or a driving assessment with an older driver assessor.

Older Driver Assessment - This assessment can be undertaken in place of the Service NSW driving test. The assessment is conducted by Sutherland Driving School who is Service NSW accredited. Assessment start and finish from your home address or any other location convenient to you. Sutherland Driving School can provide a vehicle or you can choose to use your own vehicle, which is quite often more comfortable for the driver, and testing to be conducted in your local area.

Service NSW Driving Test - Conducted from the Service NSW by the Service NSW staff. There is no training or feedback provided by the Service NSW, it is simply a driving test.

Modified Licence - If an older person has competent driving skills but is no longer up to driving in more challenging situations (eg over long distances, in heavy traffic or at night) the Service NSW can issue a modified licence which still allows them to continue driving under some circumstances. For example, a modified licence can allow the licence holder to drive within a certain distance from their home or only at certain times of the day.
